According to information from the Medical Information Network, the prevalence of myopia is showing a marked upward trend, making it a major public health issue that affects the eye health of the Chinese population, particularly among adolescents. This most common ophthalmic condition has been classified as one of the world’s three leading causes of visual impairment. In China, the prevalence of myopia stands at approximately 33%, which is 1.5 times the global average of 22% of the total population. As reported in Nature Reviews Disease Primers, nearly 2 billion people worldwide are affected by myopia, accounting for about 28.3% of the global population. By 2050, myopic individuals are projected to comprise close to 50% of the world’s population. In urban areas of Southeast Asian countries, the incidence of myopia is especially high, with prevalence rates exceeding 80% among young adults.
Myopia does not merely impair vision; research indicates that children who develop myopia before the age of 12 are more likely to progress to high myopia and face a significantly increased risk of developing eye‑health‑compromising conditions, such as macular degeneration, later in life.
Orthokeratology lenses are custom-designed contact lenses that precisely match the shape of a patient’s cornea. By gently reshaping the cornea, they alter its ability to refract light, and multiple clinical studies have demonstrated their safety and efficacy in controlling myopia.
ACUVUE Abiliti is a orthokeratology contact lens that patients wear overnight while sleeping, eliminating the need for daytime wear. Clinical studies conducted in myopic children have shown that, over a two-year period, ACUVUE Abiliti reduced axial elongation by 0.28 mm. Axial elongation is the primary factor driving the progression of myopia in children.
