On October 13, at a press conference of the State Council Joint Prevention and Control Mechanism, Wu Zunyou, Chief Epidemiologist at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, stated that post-COVID conditions, also known as long COVID, were defined clinically by the World Health Organization in October 2021. These conditions typically emerge within three months after the onset of COVID-19 infection and may manifest as new symptoms following recovery from an acute infection, or as the persistence of pre-existing symptoms from the acute phase. The symptoms must last for at least two months, recur repeatedly, and cannot be explained by any other diagnosis.

These conditions typically emerge within three months after the onset of COVID-19 and may manifest as new symptoms following recovery from an acute infection, or as the persistence of pre-existing symptoms from the acute phase. Such symptoms must last for at least two months, recur repeatedly, and cannot be accounted for by any other diagnosis.
According to the Medical Information Network, post-COVID conditions encompass a wide range of health issues, including fatigue or exhaustion, difficulty thinking or concentrating, shortness of breath or dyspnea, headache, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, chest pain, cough, joint or muscle pain, depression or anxiety, fever, and loss of smell or taste, among others. These symptoms may persist for weeks, months, or even longer.
Post-COVID conditions are commonly observed in severe cases, but they can also occur in mild cases. Individuals who have been vaccinated face a lower risk of developing post-COVID symptoms than those who remain unvaccinated. Wu Zunyou stated that the most effective way to prevent post-COVID conditions is to avoid COVID-19 infection altogether.
