Research has found that human brain cells exhibit intelligence even outside the body.

Research has found that human brain cells exhibit intelligence even outside the body.
Neurons from humans and mice learned to play the video game Pong in a single dish. For the first time, the research team demonstrated that 800,000 brain cells cultured in a petri dish can perform goal‑directed tasks, and that even brain cells grown in vitro can exhibit intrinsic intelligence, adapting their behavior over time.

Research has found that post-COVID conditions can persist for weeks, months, or even longer.

On October 13, at a press conference of the State Council Joint Prevention and Control Mechanism, Wu Zunyou, Chief Epidemiologist at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, stated that post-COVID conditions, also known as long COVID, were defined clinically by the World Health Organization in October 2021. These conditions typically emerge within three months after the onset of COVID-19 infection and may manifest as new symptoms following recovery from an acute infection, or as the persistence of pre-existing symptoms from the acute phase. The symptoms must last for at least two months, recur repeatedly, and cannot be explained by any other diagnosis.

Research has found that photographing the inner lower eyelid with a smartphone can be used to detect anemia.

Recently, U.S. scientists published a new study in the journal PLOS ONE, demonstrating that by capturing images of the inner eyelid with a smartphone and applying an algorithm to analyze these photos, they can estimate blood hemoglobin levels and thereby screen for anemia. The method achieves an accuracy of 72%. This means that in the future, individuals will be able to easily monitor their own anemic status, with people in remote areas, in particular, able to use a mobile app to self‑assess whether they are anemic.

Research has found that immune cells collaborate to prey on bacteria.

Microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses are ubiquitous. Though tiny in size, they can sometimes pose a life‑threatening risk to humans. Nevertheless, in many cases, our bodies are able to fend off these microbial invaders or learn to coexist with them, thanks to the immune system’s critical role as a protective barrier. It goes without saying that a deeper understanding of the specific mechanisms by which the immune system combats microorganisms is of great significance for developing more effective antimicrobial therapies and drugs.

Food colorings may be associated with intestinal inflammation.

A recent health study published in the journal Nature Communications found that long-term consumption of the common food coloring Allura Red induces mild intestinal inflammation in mice and increases the susceptibility of experimental models of inflammatory bowel disease to inflammation. The findings suggest the need for further research into the long-term health effects of food additives.
